Embroidered Narratives Exhibition

Posted on June 2, 2012February 4, 2019

2/6/2012

Embroidery: ‘The embellishment of fabric by means of needle worked stitches’*

Narrative:

‘A story or account of events, experiences or the like, whether true or ficticious.’*

As part of her residency – Nicola Smalley put out an open call for submissions for textiles work in response to the title ‘Embroidered Narratives’. The brief stated that we were accepting any work considered contemporary ‘Illustrative’ textiles, either hand or machine made, using any materials. Works could be representative in subject matter or completely abstract.

The work we received in response to the title for the open call in this exhibition includes personal narratives, pieces inspired by experiences and places, and conceptual responses to the title.

This exhibition shows a selection of the entries we received.

Curated by Nicola Smalley and Ellen McLeod
